“You put out a project, and you don’t know how people are going to react to it. And then to know that so many people loved and enjoyed it, it motivates me to finish the mixtape. Like oh they like my music, I have to give them more.” - KON

Dark tones, shelved records, a microphone and stereo equipment decorated his bedroom. Hip Hop artist, Kon, called it his studio. He poured a shot of wine for each one of his close friends there and toasted to their success. They sat down and began reminiscing the time they first met Kon. They laughed and joked about how he couldn’t finish one song for one reason or another. He spoke about first joining rap group “Unstoppable Unity” back in 99, who asked him if he was purposely trying to sabotage the sessions. "He would have us repeat the recordings, almost eight hours into one song," described Silent Knight a fellow group member. Clearly heard in his music, Kon was what his friends knew him as…the perfectionist.

Through cadence and flow, word pattern and rhyme scheme Kon has discovered his format of writing, making it easier for the listening human brain to latch on and remember. “Syllabliminal” is his term for it. Music on the Internet, especially free music, has also given accessibility for people to hear it right away, making it much more on demand. “Definitely guerilla style now; you have to pound in the door, and be multitalented in the industry,” he said. Rappers need to be well rounded and know how to make their own beats, their own recordings, their own promoting, and that’s when he decided to further his “knowledge.over.nonsense” and get his degree in music engineering. Learning how to make his own beats and record his own sessions, he didn’t need to rely on the industry to make his music.

Recently releasing his EP “Above the Clouds” he described his release party’s success as a result of word of mouth. His plan of action included exposing it for download so the public can freely taste his music, and then invading the streets and local open mic shows with his style. He worked hard to achieve a goal and succeeded with a wall-to-wall packed release party at Public Assembly in Brooklyn, NY. “I was still on a super high when I got off stage. It was unreal, hard to describe.” Kon spoke about his EP release party. “Family, friends, old group members, fans, supporters people that just heard the music, put together like that...they’re not even shouting my name, and I feel proud, like that’s my boy!” commented Silent Knight.

The EP included a track he wrote for his mother “Pretty Lights” where he illustrated his mother as a star above the clouds. In the song he describes her as a strong, hard working, single mother encouraging her son with his musical aspiration. Where on the other hand he had a song for his father “Forgiven” which explained how he had come to terms with not having a father around. “I tried to write that song maybe 4 or 5 times and it brought me to tears it brought me to anger and I’ve never been able to finish it, but after speaking to my sister I realized I had come to terms with it, where I could write this song more maturely. I have to pay homage to my parents they are what I am.”

Now, close to finishing his mixtape “Like It or Love It” (because you can’t hate it) and sitting in the front seat of underground music, Kon continues to challenge himself daily by consistently writing new music. Fans and fellow Hip Hop artists believe in him, and his future outcome in mainstream Hip Hop. “It’s about what you feel inside, if it’s catchy it’s catchy if it went platinum and it’s pop it’s popular and I’m fine with that. I hate “rules” in Hip Hop.”

Painting a true picture through his music, Kon continues to work on both his upcoming mixtape and upcoming album “My Glorious Imperfection.” With slick word play, poetic rhymes, catchy hooks and feel good instrumentals, Kon is striving to set a trend in lyrical Hip Hop. “It just comes to me and it’s not like something that I sometimes consciously think of; it just manifests itself…it’s that beauty I think I admire the most. It’s spontaneous and how it comes…it’s just beautiful…Hip Hop.”

Brooklyn, NY (PUBLIC ASSEMBLY) – “K-O-N! K-O-N! K-O-N!” the cult like crowd chanted, as their patience grew thin for KON to hit the stage. Performing tracks off his latest EP “Above the Clouds”, along with artists such as, Silent Knight, Maintain, Broadway, Raw Nature (who was also releasing their album) and others, opening for KON, the fans repeatedly made aware who they were there to see. Knowledge.Over.Nonsense Management equipped the “public assembly” with vintage plastic glasses, similar to the ones worn by KON, including family members of KON, such as “Momma KON”, his sister, niece and other relatives.

The soul Hip Hop artist was joined by band FUSE bringing live instrumental music, two turntables, and a mic, not to mention the poetic lyrics written and performed by the numerous artists that night. The enormous feel from the mass there to support KON and all the other artists was inexplicable. The hype this unsigned artist earned was one only seen for artists such as Wu Tang & Jay-Z, and to see it from an underground artist kicking his way through the doors of mainstream bringing Hip Hop back to its roots is beyond inspirational/motivational/stimulational/fortificational and all other ational’s in webster’s dictionary!!

I'm excited, overwhelmed, frustrated, ahhhhhhhhhh just so much is over taking me.

so from the beginning: i'm so excited! i went to see this amazing adviser at school and found out i have 9 classes left to graduate!!!! there were sooo many options running through my head, ie: do i want to stay longer and get my teacher's certificate? it sucks because i am so ready to be done with school and my anxiousness is keeping me from staying longer. i'm going back to talk to the chairmen of the college of education and see what my options are, but i'm leaning toward finishing now and coming back as an alternate route. imagine me - looking like these kids, trying to discipline & teach these kids ?? i figured after i graduate i'll look for an editing position somewhere; i'm secure til then, anyway. so that's that.

i have been sooooo sick and tired of my waitressing job. it's been killing me comepletely. with all the gossip: you have to worry about how you say things and who you say it around and then you have the table shark! IT'S FRUSTRATING!!!! it's an unfair treatment kinda job all this favoritism...DRAMA! i swear MTV should consider making it a reality show. it's the job i work the least amount of hours at, but acquired the most amount of stress from. i honestly can't say i know how much longer i am going to be there. soooo....

i spoke to a past manager and he said when i'm ready he'd take me back on as long as he had the business for it. GREAT! it's closer to home, a new start, somewhere a bit more organized. BUT do i want to continue with waitressing? i'm kinda tired of it. i know i want to go back to school and soon! i want to hurry up and finish what i started. i need to be somewhere i know i'll be able to have time to concentrate on school work.

THEN: i was offered a personal assistant position. nothing big to no one big, just someone with a lot on their plate and little time to do it all. it would just be a couple of times a week which is convenient...it's a consideration.

then i get to thinkin: omG! all these bills ugh! i just want to be rid of them already!

but i'm trying to be positive. i'm seeing the glass half full. i'm trying to be healthy and sane this year. no stress, exercise, eat healthy. i try to go to the gym as much as possible, and eating healthy has been a difficult thing to commit to being that my life is on the go. then stress comes from this damn job that's been driving me insane! it's hard trying to squeeze total health into my schedule. i tell you, i can't wait til june, when my life could go back to normal.

WELL: i came across this drink called monavie. it's a fruit blend in a juice or gel form that you take twice daily. the crown jewel of this juice is the number one superfruit - acai berry. i'm still learning and researching this drink while taking it myself, and i must say - it most definitely gives me a natural energy boost to keep up with my congested life. the instant i take it i begin to feel it rush through my body and uplift me. meanwhile it's giving me the vitamins and nutrients i need daily. and i'm maintaining the correct number of servings of fruit required, according to the food pyramid. it's also high in antioxidants which help fight free radicals & diseases. long story short: it's claimed to be a miracle juice. i recommend it to all. soon i will have my website up and running, with all the details on my research, and how to purchase this miracle in a bottle.

saying I'm proud of mommy is an understatement. she's proved to be the strongest person I've ever feasted my eyes upon. you should've seen all the wows, oohs and ahhs she was getting from the nurses & doctors. she's up and moving mostly on her own, shoot the docs even said they see her walkin again (w/out a walker) in less than a month. can u imagine that?? recovering from major surgery in a month!

well she's at rehab now and will be there for 2 weeks - then its back home. she's doing super extremely well and I know its through the power and faith in God. without him NOTHING would be possible.

as for me, I've been MIA with all these crazy hours I'm working. I've kept in touch w the music world and there's sooooo much goin on (ie - rihanna getting beat up by chris brown - there goes another great career down the tubes) the 50 cent & ross battle still continues on (what beef of his doesn't? - he'll never have ANYTHING on the L.O.X) and mr mark curry (for those that don't remember him, his character is played in the biggie movie. a scene he was in, was in the car when biggie shared with him about his mother's breast cancer, and he responded that both his parents died when he was young. he also featured on songs such as "bad boy for life" by diddy featuring black rob) has released a tell-all book entitled "dancing with the devil". this book is going to reveal deep dark secrets of bad boy in particular exposing diddy (being the devil). I heard him on an interview (wendy williams of course) didn't sound too bright but wendy praised the book, said it was a must read. I am hearing a lot of negativity; idk if they're listening to the same song i'm hearing. then again people do actually like artists such as wayne. lol. I can barely tolerate him. Credit is given when credit is due so i give wayne his on the new renaissance rap remix (even though I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't write that himself). Man life has been hard lately. I'm aiming for a better year cuz 2008 SUCKED for me and everyone I know. I'm saying it sucks cuz i'm not swimming in pool in 85 degree weather, sippin on some happy juice :) Life as a grown up is totally different (i.e: chillin at home doin some homework, playin with your friends outside, watchin tv... aww man the LIFE!)

Well now it's my turn to take charge & become the adult (psh as if I haven't been for how many years already) - on Feb 5th my mother is going in for surgery and won't be working for 6 months. Now for those of you that don't know me, I am a workaholic! I'm the most money hungry chick you'll ever meet! I'm super waitress during the day & Piano mistress by night (throwing in my fitness moments @ the gym). I work everyday about 9-10 hr days and in addition i'm going to be taking over my mom's houses, too (cleaning houses every other day AHHHHH (x_X) lol .. a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

so my life's kind testing me at this point. I'm trying to take it day by day. I've turned my life around, living peacefully, putting the past where it belongs "it's called the past cuz i'm getting passed" - A. Keyz. My main concern at this point is my family and how this is all going to play out. Thank God for having a big sister & brother to help out. Being the youngest of 3, 9 & 11 years apart, one thing a lot of people don't realize is how it feels to have older parents. Man my dad, he's the light in all of it. He's so positive and easy going. He's got his share of medical issues himself along with a possible upcoming knee surgery. Wow.

It's all a test. I'm ready for it. I have faith in myself, family & the most God. I know he won't let us fall, especially my mom.

on my routine Wendy Williams & there's a caller that says she allows her teenage son to smoke weed in the basement. It's not just her son, but IT'S HIS FRIENDS, TOO! Just like Wendy, I agree that, it is beyond WRONG! She claims she does it so her son doesn't get arrested, but the real question is what is a mother accepting her teenage son doing drugs 1st in the house, 2nd with his friends (obviously without parental consent), & 3rd PERIOD! This woman has clearly lost all boundaries of parent and friend.

So, I finally went to catch the new biggie movie "Notorious", matinee of course! With sold out seats in theaters all over the east coast, Notorious proved to be exactly its namesake!

For starters Jamal Woolard aka Gravy played an exceptional role as New York's King of hip hop The Notorious B.I.G. He brought out the side of Biggie none of us knew and every one grew to love.

Of course that's not all: Derek Luke (Diddy) NAILED THE PART - dance moves and all ; Christopher Jordan Wallace (Lil Biggie) is an exact replica of his father ; Angela Bassett (Voletta Walace) NAILED IT demonstrating her strength, emotion, & compassion through out ever line, every word spoken ; Naturi Naughton (Lil Kim) OH MY GOD - this girl was phenomenal...word on the grapevine is she didn't get any insight on Lil Kim's character through Lil Kim - strictly TALENT ; Anthony Mackie (Tupac) woooow he showed how hype and live Tupac really was ; LAST BUT NOT LEAST - kuddddoooooos to my girl Antonique Smith coming out of EAST ORANGE, NJ! I loved the scene where Faith get's a suspicious feeling about her new husband Biggie Smalls, and checks on him in a hotel room. Once she arrived her suspicions were confirmed - she brought out true sentiment as her character.

Imagine the length of this movie if Craig Mac, LOX, 112, Jay-Z, Mase, Busta Rhymes, etc would've just made appearances!

This is a story of LIFE & DEATH, strength & weaknesses, joy & pain. It corroborates the struggles of a man and his mistakes with a tragic ending. (of course this sap cried!) It teaches you the value of life, and how it's too short to follow your dreams. It teaches you to INCREASE THE PEACE, STOP THE VIOLENCE! We are all brothers and sisters and we need to unite and help one another.

"Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children." - Dr. MLK.

Born January 15th, today we reserve the 80th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and it is a celebration well deserved! Inspired by Gandhi's nonviolent activism, King had a dream that one day all men would be created equal.

If only he knew his "I have a dream" speech would become such a big part of today's world. Tomorrow, marks the date of yet another black history event - the inauguration of America's FIRST black president. If he only knew, that his dream would become a reality, to not only unite people of different race, gender, & creed, but to progress the life of African Americans & their rights to vote, attend any school, dine next to a white person; the right to drink from the same fountain, live in the same neighborhoods; the RIGHT to not live in fear of police brutality or another man's fist, spit, rocks, & threats, because of who God made you.

On March 29, 1968, Dr. King traveled to Memphis, Tennessee in support of the black sanitary public works employees. These African Americans were on strike due to low wages & unfair treatment from their employers (i.e: black street repairmen received pay for two hours when they were sent home because of bad weather, but white employees were paid for the full day.)

On April 3, King addressed a rally and delivered his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech at Mason Temple.

"Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."

Ironically this was Dr. King's last speech.

He was staying at Lorraine Motel room 306, when at 6:01 p.m. on April 4, 1968, the day after his delivered speech, he was shot while standing on the balcony of his 2nd floor motel room. The bullet entered through his right cheek smashing his jaw and then traveled down his spinal cord before lodging in his shoulder. After emergency surgery, King was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital at 7:05 p.m.

Exactly two months following his death, escaped convict James Earl Ray, was seized at London Heathrow Airport, while trying to escape with a falsified Canadian passport in the name of Ramon George Sneyd. He was immediately repatriated to Tennessee where he later confessed to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ray pleaded guilty to avoid a trial conviction and thus the possibility of receiving the death penalty, and was sentenced to a 99-year prison term.

Today is the day to celebrate black rights, and to look forward to the future under a new govern.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday, the Lake Hiawatha and Mount Tabor Branch Libraries, respectively, will both be celebrating Dr. King's birthday today.
Lake Hiawatha will be hosting two programs through out the day. Everyone can stop in and share your dreams for the future with the library and other customers. Jot down your ideas on a flip chart that will be displayed for all to see. The children's department will be holding a drop in craft from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The theme will be diversity. Children will be able to take home a decorated craft and also create a rainbow to display on the Children's bulletin board in the hallway of the library.
